Dickes B oben an der Spree…

Young, multicultural and energetic… attributes, making Berlin perfect for a trip to celebrate reunion with my former room mates from the Bahnhofsmission, Thomse, Joh and Melli. Our starting point was the Pfefferbett Hostel at Prenzlauer Berg, an academic neighborhood near the center, and on our to-do list was sightseeing, nightlife and a lot of chill-out. Omnipresent throughout the whole trip: the frisbee… especially for the latter! Blessed with nice sunshine, Berlin showed us several of its uncountable faces. The political importance impressed during a visit of the Reichstag and the Office of the Federal Chancellor. Luckily, Angela invited to an open house that weekend… sitting on the green in the garden of the Chancellor playing frisbee was an awesome experience :) . As for all tourists, exploration of Berlin’s moving past at the Berliner Mauer, the Checkpoint Charlie and the Holocaust Memorial was mandatory and left behind a sad and sentimental feeling that, however, just lasted until the words “He, wanna throw the frisbee?”. The left-liberal society of Kreuzberg in East Berlin still reminded of the former GDR and the young people, that mainly took over this part of Berlin, achieved to conserve the revolutionary vibes from 1989. With clubs along the Spree riverside in Kreuzberg and near the Warschauer Straße, Berlin impressed with its vibrant nightlife, whereas Prenzlauer Berg came up with thousands of bars and cafes in a very relaxed atmosphere.

Well… there was obviously a lot of movement in Berlin in the past but the city has also achieved to remain its spirit of movement and its will of change until today. “Berlin is a city condemned always to become, never to be.” Karl Scheffler. This is still valid, because new ideas are imported from all over the place by immigrants and young germans, who make Berlin a city that re-defines itself all the time.

Thanks to Thomse, Joh and Melli for that great trip!! Hope to see you again soon!
